Kuna Schools Update: Curriculum adoption; building repairs & more

On my Christmas playlist, I have a song from one of my favorite artists called "I Need a Silent Night." One line in the song says, "December comes then disappears faster and faster every year." I can relate to that, as here we are already at Christmas break and just a few days until Christmas!

I hope that time has slowed down for a minute and you were able to enjoy some of the wonderful concerts, celebrations, and other special events happening in our school community over these last two months.
The holiday season is such a fun and festive time, but it just seems to go by so fast. I hope that you will be able to find that "silent night" with your family this Christmas and enjoy every minute.

As we enjoy the long holiday break, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for your continued support and partnership. Here are a few updates for you.

-- Kim Bekkedahl, Kuna School District Superintendent

Parents get involved in curriculum adoption process

The district is reviewing its elementary English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade and is engaging parents in making a recommendation to the School Board.

In November, the Board approved a curriculum committee made up equally of teachers and parents from all six elementary schools. The committee is reviewing three different literacy programs.

Teachers will pilot each program over the course of the school year. Parents are working alongside teachers so they can see firsthand how the curriculum is used in their children’s classrooms.

The committee met for the first time last week to review teacher and parent feedback from the first pilot session and will meet again following the next two pilots.

Later this spring, the committee will bring forward a curriculum recommendation. Families will then have an opportunity to review the materials and provide input before the Board considers adoption.

State funds make a difference in facilities repairs

The Superintendent’s Advisory Council met last month to review how the district is using one-time state funding to address facility repair and maintenance needs and recommended sharing this information more broadly with our community.

Kuna School District received approximately $25 million in state funds for facilities and, as required, submitted a 10-year facilities plan outlining priorities, excluding athletic and sports facilities. Based on 2024 estimates, the district identified more than $194 million in facility needs and is prioritizing projects in partnership with LKV Architects and Beniton Construction.

The first projects are already underway, including HVAC and fire alarm upgrades at Indian Creek Elementary, Ross Elementary, and Kuna High School. Because this work must be completed when students are not in the buildings, projects are being done in phases. The second phase will take place this summer, resulting in most of Kuna High School being closed during the break, with programs such as summer school temporarily relocated to other sites. HVAC repairs are also planned this summer at Crimson Point Elementary and Reed Elementary.

At the recommendation of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, we’ve created a dedicated webpage to share the 10-year facilities plan and ongoing project updates. For more details, visit www.kunaschools.org/projects.

Thank you Kim Nixon; Welcome Freddy Wheeler to the School Board

In January, we will see a change on our school board as long-time trustee Kimberlee Nixon retires from service. I am deeply grateful for Kim’s many years of dedication to our district—first as a teacher and later as a school board member—culminating in her service as Board Chair. While she’s planning many RV adventures with her husband, Kim intends to stay connected to our school community, including signing up to serve as a substitute. Thank you, Kim, for your lasting impact on our schools.

In November, Freddy Wheeler was elected to replace Kim on the board. I appreciate the time Freddy has already taken to meet with me and district staff as he prepares to take office in January, and I look forward to working with him in the year ahead.
